Sports throughout the world have assumed an importance beyond its recreational aspect. This resulted in that the readers are demanding more sports matter. The revolutionary step in Indian journalism was the introduction of a sports page by a leading English daily of Bombay in the late 30s. It is a positive sign that late sports have received a strong impetus in India . People are now taking more interest in sports, games, athletic events than ever before. Government’s interest in sports is also increased. The initiation of Sports council and Sports Authority of India and the establishment of National Institute of Sports, BCCI, CAB, IFA, AIFA all are examples of the changed trend. A number of states have introduced sports as compulsory subjects in schools and some of have started sports schools. Sports management and sports psychology have included as a subject to be learnt. In India there are some institutions that offer courses on sports journalism such as, Xavier Institute of Communication (Mumbai), Times School of Journalism (New Delhi), Asian College of Journalism (Chennai) etc.
Garima Verma, a sports journalist of ESPN.com says – “with sports becoming more prominent in terms of wealth, power and influence, the pay packages for sports journalists have also gone up.”
Emphasis on sports coverage is so much mow that the news papers are sending their sports correspondent to foreign countries wherever Indian teams are going overseas for playing important cricket or football tournament. Sports have emerged as the most important subject in the present media world. Which used to be a one page affairs till the 80s and 90s of the last century, has got 4 to 6 pages of daily coverage, sometimes get the front page cover story. In 1967 Ananda Bazar Patrika projected the sports news on front page. In many media organizations, they have brought the sports journalist under separate sports department. Separate desks have also developed to serve the sports news. Beside sports news and information, the gossip, background story, corruption, controversies are getting spot light in regular coverage.
There are sports channels like Neo cricket, Ten sports, Star cricket, ESPN, DD sports devoted to sporting programmes. The magazines that serve to sports such as Sports Star (Hindu group), Sports India , Khel, Tennis tour, Sports world (ABP), Khela (Ajkal) etc. there are also websites on sports like- ESPNSTAR.com, cricBuzz.com, cricketnext.com, cricinfo.india, http://www.tensports.com/. from where sports lovers would get sports news. Not only that, we can see studio analysis by renowned sportsmen and national sports heroes of the past giving in-depth analysis. The former sports personalities are becoming anchor to host a sporting event. Special syndicate column written by sports persons are available. Not only cricket, football, tennis, but the indigenous sports are getting out of their shells with a bang, the recently Common wealth games is the example of this. But sport is not only a field of talent, performance, entertainment, advertisement, endorsement, sponsorship, image manufacture, corruption, marketing, business, hero worship but apart from that it is a powerful and cost effective way to channelise development, peace and awareness raising for the betterment of mankind. So the future of sporting events and sports journalism are bright in India .
